(August 16, 2009) – Kannapolis, NC – Imagine nearly a mile of boardwalk along the Rocky River, greenways that connect Concord and Kannapolis and walking paths near Concord Mills.

That’s the promise a series of trails included in the massive Carolina Thread Trail initiative and greenways planned by Cabarrus County municipalities will bring to the area, planners told Concord City Council last week.

Greenways Inc., which is helping to design and plan local projects, including the 4.1-mile Rocky River Greenway, recently began presenting the plans to local city governments.

The cities are being asked to approve the current report so the planning can continue in the same direction.

The Carolina Thread Trail is a regional network that will link more than 2 million people via hundreds of miles of trails through 15 counties.

About 42.2 miles of the Carolina Thread Trail are located in Concord. They include about 21 miles in the Rocky River Corridor, about 19 miles along Irish Buffalo Creek and about 2 miles along Cabarrus Avenue.

The Rocky River Greenway, which is a city project, will be part of the Carolina Thread Trail.

The proposed greenway is located on Weddington Road just east of Concord Mills and Charlotte Motor Speedway in southwest Concord. The greenway has the potential to connect the Rocky River area to the speedway, Rocky River Golf Club and Concord Convention Center.

Recent public meetings have narrowed the options for that greenway to a 4.1-mile path that crosses the Rocky River five times. It also will include two trail underpasses and 0.92 miles of
boardwalk.
