County Spending Decreases by 44.2 Percent to $287.5 Million

CONCORD, N.C. (November 2, 2021) – Domestic and international visitors to and within Cabarrus County spent $287.5 million in 2020, a decrease of 44.2 percent from 2019. The data comes from an annual study commissioned by Visit North Carolina, a unit of the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina.

“Travel is essential to the health of our local economy,” said Cabarrus County CVB President and CEO Donna Carpenter. “As Cabarrus County’s hospitality industry continues to persevere and overcome challenges set forth by the pandemic, our organization remains dedicated to helping tourism thrive so our community continues to experience its many benefits.”

“The tourism industry in Cabarrus County was tremendously affected by the pandemic, however with the direction of our CVB, local partners and the hospitality community we are making a comeback in re-establishing our market,” said Owen Parker, Chair of the Cabarrus County CVB Board of Directors and General Manager of Hilton Garden Inn Charlotte/Concord. “We look forward to continued success as we navigate the obstacles ahead.”

2020 Cabarrus County Tourism Impact Highlights:

  • The travel and tourism industry directly employs more than 3,363 people
  • Total payroll generated by the tourism industry in Cabarrus County was $108.4 million
  • State and local tax revenues totaled $25 million from travel to Cabarrus County
  • Taxes generated by visitor spending represent a tax savings of $115.21 per resident
  • Cabarrus County ranks 16th in travel impact among North Carolina’s 100 counties
