Visitor Spending Increased by 10.3 Percent to $624.89 Million

CONCORD, N.C. (August 14, 2024) – Domestic and international visitors to and within Cabarrus County spent $624.89 million in 2023. The data comes from an annual study commissioned by Visit North Carolina, a unit of the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina.

“The consistent growth of our hospitality industry would not be possible without the visitors who choose to spend their time here, the people who graciously welcome those guests, and everyone who enthusiastically champions tourism in Cabarrus County,” said Cabarrus County Convention & Visitors Bureau President and CEO Donna Carpenter. “We’re grateful to all who play a role in the success of tourism here.”

With an increase of 10.3 percent from 2022, Cabarrus County had the eighth highest visitor spending growth rate of the state’s 100 counties. Cabarrus was also among the top counties in North Carolina for increases in direct tourism employment, up 9.3 percent from 2022.

“While significantly fueling economic growth, this destination’s dynamic tourism industry also contributes to overall quality of life in Cabarrus County,” said Greg Walter, Cabarrus County CVB Board of Directors chair and Charlotte Motor Speedway President and General Manager. “From outstanding events and venues to immersive experiences and exceptional service, the offerings here create unforgettable memories for visitors and bring an array of benefits to our community.”

2023 Cabarrus County Tourism Impact Highlights:

  • The travel and tourism industry directly employs more than 4,821 people in Cabarrus County
  • Total payroll generated by the tourism industry in Cabarrus County was $171.5 million
  • State and local tax revenues totaled $41.1 million from travel to Cabarrus County
  • Taxes generated by visitor spending represent a tax savings of $171.51 per resident
  • Cabarrus County ranks 13th in total visitor spending among North Carolina’s 100 counties
