Jay M. Robinson Mondo Track & Field Facility in Concord, North Carolina

Teams from as far as New York and Florida will travel to Concord for start of outdoor track and field season

CONCORD, N.C. (April 22, 2025) – The Jay M. Robinson Mondo Track & Field Facility continues to generate economic impact from sports tourism in Cabarrus County. The venue is set to host its first meet of the 2025 season this month which is expected to generate an estimated economic impact of more than $488,000.

During the USA South Conference Championship on April 25-26, 150 collegiate athletes will compete in a variety of track and field events including high jump, long/triple jump and all throwing events. The meet is also expected to bring 150 spectators.

“As the destination’s official marketing organization, one of our goals is to attract visitors from the sports segment in order to generate positive impact through visitor spending,” said Cabarrus County Convention & Visitors Bureau President and CEO Donna Carpenter. “We’re thrilled to see that goal being met with a community asset that benefits both visitors and residents. Taxes generated by visitor spending made enhancements to this facility possible, so we have past visitors to thank.”

To date, the Cabarrus County CVB has worked with community partners to secure a total of seven events to take place at the facility in 2025 with opportunity to host additional events throughout the season. Collectively, these events are expected to draw approximately 17,000 attendees, including athletes and spectators, and have the potential to generate a total of $5.9 million in estimated economic impact in Cabarrus County.

“The USA South is extremely excited to kick off the 2025 outdoor track season in Concord,” said USA South Commissioner, Tom Hart. “The outdoor track and field facilities at Robinson high school exceeded our expectations during the first year. With the addition of a video board, we remain impressed with the commitment community leadership displays as they strive for continuous improvement. We look forward to calling Cabarrus County home for a few days each spring.”

Completed in 2023 on the campus of Jay M. Robinson High School, the Mondo Track & Field Facility was brought to fruition through a unique partnership between the Cabarrus County CVB, Cabarrus County Government and Cabarrus County Schools. The school was selected as the location for the facility based on its proximity to area hotels. An LED video display was installed in September 2024 for timing and scoring purposes.

“Thanks to our strong partnership with the Cabarrus Visitors Bureau, the track facility at Jay M. Robinson High School is a shining example of what collaboration can achieve,” said Rob Walter, Cabarrus County Board of Education chair. “This project not only enhances opportunities for our students and student-athletes, but it also positions our district as a destination for regional and state-level competitions. We’re proud of the impact this facility has had on our schools and our community and proud to work with our partners at the CVB to make Cabarrus County a destination location.”
