CONCORD, NC (August 17, 2017) – Visit North Carolina recently announced that domestic visitors to and within Cabarrus County spent $433.03 million in 2016, an increase of 5.21% from 2015. Cabarrus County ranks 12th in travel impact among North Carolina’s 100 counties.

“Tourism contributes a great deal to our thriving local economy,” said Cabarrus County CVB President and CEO Donna Carpenter. “Steady year-over-year increases in visitor spending indicate that our community is well on its way to achieving this organization’s vision of becoming the number one economic force of Cabarrus County.”

The economic contribution of tourism sustains income for residents which enhances quality of life and makes this area attractive to economic development opportunities. The Cabarrus County CVB takes great pride in reinvesting traveler spending into projects that enhance visitor experience such as the developing county-wide wayfinding system, and marketing efforts that share our community’s story on a greater scale like the recently launched “People of Cabarrus” campaign.

“At the backbone of tourism in Cabarrus County is the hard work and entrepreneurial spirit of local business owners,” adds Pam DuBois, Chair of the Cabarrus County CVB Board of Directors. “They have created a place where people from across the country come to visit and engage in our community.”

2016 Cabarrus County tourism impact highlights:

  • The travel and tourism industry directly employs 4,500 people
  • Total payroll generated by the tourism industry in Cabarrus County was $98.69 million
  • State tax revenues totaled $24.92 million and local tax revenues totaled $7.58 million from travel to Cabarrus County
  • If not for state and local taxes generated by tourism in Cabarrus County, each household would pay $484 more in taxes

These statistics come from “The Economic Impact of Travel on North Carolina Counties 2016.” The study was prepared for Visit North Carolina by the U.S. Travel Association.
