CONCORD, N.C. (April 12, 2021) – In a unique opportunity to simultaneously enhance the area’s tourism assets and school facilities, the Cabarrus County Convention & Visitors Bureau has partnered with Cabarrus County Government and Cabarrus County Schools to expand the destination’s offerings for amateur sports with four new turf fields. The dual-purpose project provides new venues for tournaments that bring positive economic impact while serving as state-of-the-art home fields for three local high schools.
“Tourism benefits the community in number of ways, and we’re thrilled the stars aligned in this situation to bring a service to both our visitors and citizens,” said Donna Carpenter, Cabarrus County CVB President and CEO. “We look forward to seeing guests and locals alike enjoy these amazing new facilities and everything the surrounding area has to offer.”
Student athletes from Cox Mill High School, Jay M. Robinson High School and West Cabarrus High School help cut the ribbon on Cabarrus County’s new turf fields.
The shared vision and established relationship between Cabarrus County Government and the CVB made it feasible to fund the project through allocated occupancy tax dedicated to enhancing sports facilities in the destination.
“The development of this project is the result of collaboration, which is at the heart of the Cabarrus County mission – people, communities and government working together and staying focused on a successful future,” said Steve Morris, Cabarrus County Board of Commissioners Chairman.
New fields resulting from this collaboration include one stadium field at Cox Mill High School, one stadium field at Jay M. Robinson High School and two auxiliary fields at West Cabarrus High School. Each field is equipped with cooling technology and is lined for football, soccer, and lacrosse.
“Cabarrus County Schools and the community will benefit greatly from the year-round use of these turf athletic fields,” said Holly Grimsley, Cabarrus County Schools Board of Education Chair. “We are very appreciative and proud of the collaborative partnership we have with the CVB and Cabarrus County that made this happen.”
“The Cabarrus County Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Cabarrus County Government have been great partners in serving our students and community,” said Brian Schultz, Cabarrus County Schools Interim Superintendent. “The synthetic turf fields at Cox Mill, Jay M. Robinson, and West Cabarrus High Schools are an example of this great partnership and their support for public schools in Cabarrus County. In addition to being used by the schools where these fields are located, they will be utilized by all CCS high schools for both practices and games when inclement weather leaves their natural grass surfaces unusable.”
The venues have and will continue to generate bookings bringing event organizers, supporting staff, athletes, and their loved ones to Cabarrus County as North Carolina’s reopening progresses.
“Diamond Sports Group wasn’t just looking for a location, we were looking for a destination and chose Cabarrus County as the new home for the Summer Shine Tournament,” said Larry Kennedy Jr., President of Diamond Sports Group.
The first visiting event is set to take place at West Cabarrus High School on April 17-18.
